The mining industry, in particular diamond mining, is the country’s main industry. However, the oil industry is also important. Although Sierra Leone has no viable oil reserves of its own, its downstream sector is well developed.
The majority of the labour force is involved in subsistence farming producing food crops such as rice and commercial crops including cocoa, coffee, palm kernels and ginger. The fishing industry has growth potential, particularly in oyster farming and shrimp production. Freetown is one of the best natural harbours although it has not fulfilled its full potential.
