The key elements in Mauritania’s economy are the mining and oil industries. Mauritania is one of only four West African countries to operate a refinery. There is a small manufacturing industry which deals mainly with fish processing and iron ore.
Most regions are suitable for livestock raising only, due to unreliable rainfall. The fishing industry is important to the economy and Mauritania has rich marine resources although these have been over exploited.
