INDUSTRY:

The economy is based on agriculture and the main food crops include rice, plantains, maize, cassava, sorghum, millet, sweet potatoes and beans. Most of these are produced by subsistence farmers. Livestock is also kept in specific areas. Small amounts of fish and timber are exported at the moment, however these industries both have potential for growth.

There is a relatively new mining industry which does offers some investment potential. There are natural resources of gold, phosphate, bauxite and oil, however, at the present time, the costs of exploration is more than the country can afford. Therefore, foreign investment is being encouraged.
